Field Trips
Our students love field trips, which enhance and solidify their understanding of the content we teach. As a result, trips vary from grade to grade and often year to year as we explore the curriculum through the lens of what our great city has to offer. Recurring trips include, but are not limited to, The American Museum of Natural History, The NY Historical Society, The New York City Ballet, Inwood Park, and The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.
WIN (Small Group Instruction)
PS 9 is very proud of our What I Need (WIN) program, an idea that came from our teachers as they reflected on the practices necessary to support a diverse group of students each year. Teachers regularly assess students to determine their independent reading level, including reading accuracy, comprehension, fluency, and rate, then use this data and the child’s individual needs to group students across the grade-level, rather than just one classroom. Students meet with their WIN teachers for 45 minutes twice a week in six week cycles to ensure that every child feels successful while working with peers who have similar needs. Teachers provide small group reading instruction and explicit phonics instruction in order to promote growth as well as a love of reading.
Word Study
The Orton Gillingham approach was originally designed for students with dyslexia however their explicit, multisensory, and sequential instruction has proved helpful for all of our students as they learn to read and write. Every PS 9 teacher has been trained on the approach, but it is used daily in the early elementary grades (K-2).
Social Emotional Learning
RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
RULER supports whole school communities in understanding the value of emotions, building the skills of emotional intelligence, and creating and maintaining a positive school environment for all.
By infusing the principles of emotional intelligence into school communities, RULER strengthens how students learn, teachers teach, families parent, and leaders lead.
For more information about how we use RULER specifically at PS9, please check out this PPT presentation we shared previously with families.

Instrumental Music
In the PS 9 instrumental program students will learn to play the violin, clarinet, flute, trumpet, or a percussion instrument.
NYC Ballet
Students work to strengthen their own artistic voices and explore how ballet is an accessible art form relevant to their daily lives. The professional dance educators partner with classroom teachers to incorporate the arts into literacy and learning.
Robotics
We are partnering with NYC First and LEGO to give students the opportunity to engage with STEM and robotics in meaningful and joyful ways.
Carnegie Hall
Students are given the opportunity to join the orchestra in this highly participatory program, in which they learn to sing and play an instrument in the classroom and perform with a professional orchestra from their seats at a culminating concert at Carnegie Hall.
Chess
Chess at PS 9 provides an opportunity for students to learn and play chess in a social and educational setting. The main purpose of offering chess at school is to promote critical thinking, strategic planning, problem-solving skills, and sportsmanship among students.
5 Grade Clubs
Fifth grade clubs meet biweekly and in two sessions throughout the year. Students choose which club they would like to participate in, from such choices as Web Design, Kindness Ambassadors, and Tech Team.
